I have known Heather White for 10 years going back to when we both worked as Make-up Artists for Daniel Sandler’s Creative Team. I remember the first time we actually met, was when we were both booked to work on a film together in London. Due to the early call times I contacted Heather and invited her to stay at our house for a couple of nights. Thank goodness we got on like a house on fire and have been good friends ever since.
Lets Meet Heather
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am Mum to two wonderful girls, have a scruffy little dog called Tilly and live in a hamlet on the Leicestershire/Rutland border. Could do with losing a few pounds, but I like my food too much. I drive a little black Mini which is always filthy and my guilty pleasure is Hawaii Five-O, the scenery is so beautiful 😉
What has driven you to get where you are now?
I started my working life in a very corporate environment with a lot of structure, not what I wanted to do after leaving education, but it gave me a great lifestyle and the opportunity to retrain in makeup, beauty and hair with some amazing mentors and training centres.
When did Heather White Salon open?
We opened this salon on 1st October 2015, so just over a year ago. It’s flown by!!
Why did you decide to expand?
We simply couldn’t accommodate all our clients in the space we had, and clients were requesting we reintroduce beauty and extended makeup services on to the menu. The space became available around six months into our lease and the Landlord worked with us to refurbish the additional floor plan to suit our needs. It was a scary decision to make at that point in the business but on average we are attracting more than 20 new clients a month so I’m glad I made the leap.
What would you say are your favourite treatments?
I love doing hair, but also get great satisfaction from a good waxing service…….. facials, make up, brows and a good lash lift…. don’t make me choose, I enjoy them all 🙂
Tell us about your lovely team?
I have two awesome Associates, Sophie and Lisa. Sophie is a qualified makeup artist and beauty therapist, and also working through her Level 2 in hairdressing. Lisa is a qualified hairdresser and specialises in barbering, but has her eye on some nail training too! We have a potential apprentice starting soon who will initially work with us on Saturdays, hopefully leading into a full-time training role in the summer. If we keep growing at such a rate we will be on the look out for Associates again soon.
You are a pro MUA, how do you find the time to run a successful salon as well? What’s your secret?
I just love what I do, working with my clients, whether it is in the salon or on location. I have a fabulous mix of private and commercial clients so I could be in the salon with a full column one day, educating for a brand another or liaising with Brides and their wedding party’s another. So much variety, I struggle with the whole home/work balance and sometimes have to reign myself in and give myself a good talking too.
Who are your inspirations?
Many, many people. I have been very lucky and met some wonderful people in my career so far. Daniel Sandler gave me my first big break, I wouldn’t be where I am now without him taking a chance on me. I worked on a brand tour a few years ago, it was my first ‘real’ tour and the first person I met when I arrived at the location was Jamie Stevens, he was so lovely, made me feel part of the team and got me a cup of tea! Jack Howard graciously taught me how to balayage, he was so generous with his knowledge, such a great outlook on life…… loved the time I spent with him. Debbie Astell is a choreographer/producer that I had the pleasure of spending my time with, a true professional, her team are simply awesome…… we worked hard but boy we had some fun too.
Two not so well-known people, Sandra Price and Chris Pickup, my hairdressing mentors. Sandra took me on at her salon and introduced me to hair the old school way, she picked me up when I needed it and knocked me down a peg if I needed it too! She is family to me now and I love her dearly. Chris was my assessor at college, again so very willing to share his knowledge and experience, I learnt so much from him. Unfortunately he passed away two years ago, I hope he’d be proud of what I’ve achieved, I still think of him when I pick up my scissors.
I believe that everyone we meet along the way has a part to play in our journey, and I’m very fortunate to have met some wonderfully amazing people in my time so far.
What can we expect from Heather White in the next 5 years?
I’d like to raise the profile of the salon to a national level, some awards would be nice, but mostly I want to be a salon of excellence, working with like-minded brands, have a strong reputation for customer service and be the salon that hairdressers want to work at.
If you were stranded on a desert island, and could take 1 ‘product’ what would it be and why?
Lucas Pawpaw…… my catch-all and forever go to. I use it for everything 🙂 🙂
How is Heather White spending Christmas?
The lead up to Christmas is a busy time in the salon, so I usually spend a quiet Christmas Day at home just me and my youngest daughter, and then have a day of visitors on Boxing Day. If the days fall right and we have more time off then I might sneak in some shopping in the sales and grab myself a bargain or two.
Roger and I were delighted that we were able to visit her open day of her newly expanded Salon in Blaby, Leicestershire.
Located at the Blaby Golf Centre, the salon has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Committed to excellent standards of client care and technical expertise, which alongside their portfolio of salon only brands ensures and enjoyable salon experience for all. The team are all highly qualified professionals in hair and beauty with years of experience between them.
The salon has such a warm and welcoming feeling, the expansion looks amazing and I can’t wait to book in for some relaxing treatments. Roger squeezed in a hair cut with Lisa whilst we were there.
